2012 Marketer of the Year Award Gala

By Kristen Olsen

Marketer of the Year is an annual BCAMA award that recognizes the most outstanding integrated marketing strategy in the province. This year, Capilano Suspension Bridge Park was recognized as the 42nd Marketer of the Year for successfully developing and executing an integrated campaign for the opening of Cliffwalk, a heart-stopping cliffside journey high above the Capilano River.

The advertising for the 2012 Marketer of the Year Gala, which held on Wednesday, October 24, promised an entertaining evening – which it was! It was also a stellar opportunity to network with Vancouver’s best and brightest marketers; but most importantly, it was an occasion to get together with colleagues and peers to celebrate an outstanding marketing campaign.

The Gala began at 5 p.m. with registration and networking in the foyer of the Westin Bayshore Grand Ballroom. Guests mingled and schmoozed, their relaxed mood aided by the well-stocked bars. Notable attendees from the BCAMA included Meghan Carter (Director of Marketer of the Year), Lionel Matecha (Director of Web Services), Regina Leung (Director of Sponsorship), Pauline Craggs (Registration/Treasurer), Sarah Clayton (President-Elect) and Steve Kim (President).

The Flipbook Studio added to the fun at the reception by taking short video clips of uninhibited guests, and then turning the clips into flipbooks within minutes. Other guests debated which of the 18 silent auction items to bid on – items ranged from a lululemon yoga starter kit to a 4-person Racing Experience package at Hastings Racecourse to a 2-night stay in a deluxe room at the Hotel Allegro in Chicago.

At 6:30 p.m., guests filtered into the ballroom for dinner, and were treated to an exellent meal of salad, free-range chicken supreme and a dessert trilogy.

A live auction followed, with generous offerings from 4 local industries: a ¼-page colour print ad in the Vancouver Sun and Province, plus online digital ads; a dinner for 8 at the Chef’s Table at Earls North Vancouver; a 1-night stay at the Metropolitan Hotel, with a shopping spree at John Fluevog Shoes; and 4 Whitecaps FC game tickets, plus branded merchandise, courtesy of the Whitecaps Foundation.

At 8:00 p.m., Capilano Suspension Bridge Park executives Nancy Stibbard (owner and CEO), John Stibbard (Vice President, Operations), Sue Kaffka (Vice President, Sales & Marketing) and Stacey Chala (Communications Manager) presented the history of the park and the inspiration for Cliffwalk with a clever combination of video and on-stage appearances. They also reviewed highlights of the integrated campaign – which featured media relations, promotion, sales initiatives, online and social media, radio and outdoor advertising. Kudos to all 3 presenters for maintaining their composure while being accompanied by a chorus of comedic “Mounties”!

The Capilano Suspension Bridge Park presentation concluded with a generous gift of a British Columbia Residents Annual Pass to each guest at the Gala.

At the end of the evening, top honours were officially bestowed on Capilano Suspension Bridge Park with the presentation of the 2012 Marketer of the Year Award by Steve Kim, BCAMA President, and Sarah Clayton, BCAMA President-Elect.

The BCAMA Board would like to once again congratulate the Capilano Suspension Park Bridge on winning the 2012 Marketer of the Year Award, and to extend their thanks to the judges, sponsors and volunteers, and everyone whose efforts made the Marketer of the Year Award and Gala possible.
